Boarding Advice

Here are some tips on making your pet's first stay a happy one.

Visit and walk about
Phone Natures Ark kennels and arrange to be shown around before you book. This will give you the feel of the place. You may think of questions to ask when you see the place. If you think you are going to cry when you leave your pet and it will spoil your holiday, why not book him in for a very short spell as a rehearsal?

Please check that your pet's inoculations are up to date before you go on holiday. The vet will give you a certificate once your pet has had the necessary inoculations. You will need to email this certificate to Natures Ark prior to you arriving at the kennels for check in.

Prevent your pet from getting biliary
There is a killer illness against which there is no inoculation, and that is biliary. It is spread by ticks. Tick and flea collars and Frontline are available from your vet or supermarket, to protect your pet against ticks and fleas. Make sure the product kills ticks and not just fleas! You need to bring the tick and flea with for Stacey to administer on your pet, in front of you. Send enough tick and flea product to protect your pet for the whole period. It normally lasts for about a month. You will not have to worry about other pets having parasites if your own pet is protected!

You should also deworm your pet before you go, to make sure your pet is in peak condition. Deworm tablets can be obtained from the supermarket or your vet.

Label the medication
Should your pet need medication while at the kennels, make sure that the medicine is clearly labeled, and has your pet's name on it, with clear instructions as to how often and dosage the medicine is to be given.

If your pet is on a special diet, make sure you have brought ample amount of food for your pets stay, and write down instructions as to the quantity of food.

Grooming can be arranged at an additional fee.

Leave you scent
You may want to send your pets own bed and bedding so that your pet has a familiar smell of home. Some people prefer to use my bedding.

Stay calm
Your pet needs your calmness on the day you are to go on holiday! If you are anxious and unhappy, your pet will pick this up. So act cheerful!

Kitty box
Cats should be put in a basket or box with a secure lid, so that they are safe on arrival at the cattery. Get your cat used to the box beforehand. Feed him and stroke him in it.

Put doggy on a lead
Dogs should be put on a lead to keep them under control when they arrive at the kennel. If you haven't got a lead, keep you dog in the car and ask me to get one for you, before letting your dog out of the car.

Say goodbye quickly
Act cheerful and confident to reassure your pet. Say goodbye quickly and depart. Your pet will wonder where you have gone, but the next morning, you pet will see that there are interesting things going on, and new smells to be investigated. He will settle down! Try not to worry!

Book early
Christmas and Easter are the busiest times, so book your pets in as soon as you know the dates you will be away. Remember to let Natures Ark know if you have to cancel or change your dates so that other animals can be accommodated. If your pet has never been in a kennel before, book it in for a one-night practice before the busy season, so that your pet has time to adjust when things are quiet.
